Being an auto electrician in Katherine NT can at times be quite humours, so I thought I would share a couple of amusing jobs that were caused by animals.
I once repaired auto electrical wiring under a fully loaded cattle truck trailer. As everyone knows cattle tend to pee and poop continuously. It was the middle of October 40+ degrees here am I under the trailer with a rain coat and hat on just to try to keep dry and anyone who knows me, knows I like to talk, but I sure kept my mouth shut that day.
I’ve had quite a few jobs repairing auto electrical systems that were chewed by dogs, on boats, trailers, cars and horse floats, but the following two are stand outs.
A lady at a local horse event tied her three dogs to the horse float one at the draw bar of the float, one on the side of the float and the third at the rear.
The dog at the front chewed through the wiring and destroyed the trailer plug, the dog at the rear chewed through the auto electrical wiring to the brake and tail lights and not to be out done the dog in the middle chewed through the brake line. Expensive!
My favourite animal tale is the story of the dog who has chewed through a customer’s auto electrical wiring three times. (I thanked the dog the other day with a big bone. I kind of figured the dog had paid for it).
This customer, who by the third occurrence was seriously annoyed, thought about ways to deter the dog short of tying it up or getting rid of it.
Firstly he thought about collecting the dog’s faeces mixing it with water and then rubbing it all over the wiring.
Poo! only a plumber would think of that as a remedy.
My suggestion was chilli steeped in hot water, when cool put into a spray bottle and spray on the auto electrical wiring.
My customer made a concoction of ground up chili, tabasco sauce, KN pepper and water and sprayed it on his wiring.
I will keep you posted re his success in keeping his auto electrical system intact.
Perhaps the cure is as simple as a very large bone to chew.
If your animals happen to put you in a position where you require an auto electrician who won’t laugh (too much) at your predicament my contact details are on www.terrysautoelectrical.com.au
I had some pests get into my electrical system and I want to make sure I get it taken care of. I didn’t realize it could be such a huge issue! I’ll make sure to hire a professional to handle it.
